Heading into Sunday’s game against Tennessee, South Carolina already had one major contributor—Bianca Cuevas-Moore—out and they learned before the game they’d have a new, brighter addition to the bench.

A’ja Wilson, boasting a hot pink cast, would miss the game with an ankle sprain and force a young and somewhat under-sized Gamecocks post.

“I try not to dwell on what we don’t have and put my energy into what we do have and getting those players ready to play,” head coach Dawn Staley said. “If its’ eight, if it’s seven, if it’s five, we’re just going to go.”

The Gamecocks (14-3 3-2 SEC) got enough production out of their bigs Alexis Jennings, LeLe Grissett and Mikiah Herbert Harrigan, which combined for 28 points on 12-of-21 shooting.

But, by the end of the game, the already thin team would be down another player. Herbert Harrigan would go up for a rebound late in the 86-70 loss and wouldn’t get up again without the help of trainers.

She stayed down on the floor for a while before being carried by two staffers straight into the team locker room.

The sophomore started her first game of the season filling in for the already injured Wilson, finishing with six points on 3-of-9 shooting.

Staley said after the game she’s doing “better than we thought” when the injury happened.

“Her ligaments are strong,” she said. “She’ll get an MRI tomorrow.”

For Wilson, who’s been the go-to player this season averaging 23.2 points points and 11.1 rebounds a game, she’ll be out for the next few days.

She’ll have her cast taken off tomorrow and then the coaches will evaluate her status going forward after that.

“She’ll get an MRI tomorrow,” Staley said. “Then we’ll see how it goes. She put weight on it before the cast, so that’s always a good sign.”

With two big post players out for the foreseeable future, the onus now falls on the healthiest Gamecocks to go out and play their best going forward.

Ty Harris did her best to will the team to a win Sunday, posting a career-high 28 points. While the loss still stings, she thinks going through these injuries early in SEC play will be a benefit later.

“Adversity is a hard thing to over come and I think we do a pretty good job of that. When A’ja comes back we’re going to have more firepower and more rotations for our bench and our starters.”
