Tale of the tape: Charting Bentley's first start

South Carolina freshman quarterback Jake Bentley made his much-anticipated debut Saturday against UMass.

Breaking down Bentley's dropbacks:

DRIVE 1

Throw No. 1 - Screen to Deebo Samuel - Dropped - Bentley's throw is on the money and leads Samuel up the field, but he can't hold on.

Throw No. 2 - Complete to Bryan Edwards for 14 yards - This was a big early throw for Bentley. It was the first clear throwing situation of the game and the difference in a three-and-out and what ultimately was a well-executed touchdown drive. Bentley's throw is a strike to Edwards who was running and out route against man coverage. Good read and play-call.

DRIVE 2

Throw No. 3 - Incomplete to Hayden Hurst - Hurst runs a hitch but Bentley seems to throw more of an out. Either a wide throw or miscommunication.

Throw No. 4 - Screen complete to Samuel for 47 yards - Bentley looks at the running back in the flat in one direction and then pivots back to the screen to Samuel. This looks like an easy throw at first, but it's in a perfect spot that leads Samuel up field where he gets great blocks from Hurst and left guard Zack Bailey.

DRIVE 3

Dropback No. 5 - Tucks and runs for 5 yards - Play is negated by hold called on Rico Dowdle.

Throw No. 5 - Screen to Edwards - Dropped - Ball is again in a good spot.

Throw No. 6 - Screen to Samuel for 6 yards - This screen is set up a bit different than the others with Samuel in the slot. It's a positive play, but almost the equivalent of a draw as it was called on 3rd and 17.

DRIVE 4

Throw No. 7 - Complete to Chavis Dawkins for 5 yards - A similar play to the one that Bentley missed wide to Hurst on the first drive. This one is one the money and complete.

Throw No. 8 - Incomplete to Samuel on rollout - Bentley shows his escapability on this play and it nearly makes for a big gain down field. Bentley shrugs off the rush and then rolls to his left before making a throw against his body to Samuel. Samuel comes back to the throw, which is a little short, but can't haul it in. Good play by Bentley and one that Samuel usually makes.

Throw No. 9 - Complete to Terry Googer for 13 yards - Another third and long completion, this one comes on third and 14. Against the cover 3 zone, Bentley climbs the pocket to allow Googer to get down field no the deep comeback, and then fires a strike. This one is right at the marker but is marked barely short.
