OMAHA, Neb. - The NCAA made its decision, and Ray Tanner made his.
South Carolina's College World Series elimination game against Kent State on Wednesday was postponed by rain, pushing it to noon on Thursday. While freshman Jordan Montgomery was going to start on Wednesday for the Gamecocks, the extra day of rest put ace Michael Roth back into play.
"I'll go and talk with (pitching coach Jerry) Meyers," Tanner said after the game was called, around 10 p.m. "If we're going to stay here, Montgomery's got to pitch."
Despite that, Roth will start. USC announced it at 11:35 p.m. Montgomery would presumably go against Arkansas if USC wins.
Montgomery (5-1) got the call for the elimination game due to Roth only having three days rest. The extra day gave Roth another day to recover, despite the early start, and it seems very probable that if USC beats Kent State on Thursday, Montgomery and Roth will both be in action.
The early-game winner has to play Arkansas at 9 p.m. on Thursday in a rare triple-header. With two wins, USC forces a winner-take-all game to advance to the national championship series on Friday, with No. 2 starter Colby Holmes presumably ready to go.
Kent State could have also brought back its ace, David Starn, for the early game, but announced that it is sticking with Wednesday starter Tyler Skulina.
The USC-Kent State winner has to beat Arkansas twice, on Thursday and on Friday, to advance to the national championship series. USC and Kent State will start the triple-header at TD Ameritrade Park, followed by Florida State-Arizona at 5 p.m. and the USC-Kent State winner-Arkansas at 9 p.m.
Two storm cells blew over Omaha with a break in between, and the decision was made that there wouldn't be enough time to prepare the field and play before more severe weather hit. Tanner and Kent State coach Scott Stricklin met with NCAA officials before the decision was made.
