Alumni Game Melds Past and Present
The final score didn't matter.
"It's good to have those guys coming out and doing this kind of thing," Randy Martz said on Friday, following South Carolina's alumni baseball game. "Carolina's been good to us and it's a good way to pay back Carolina."

Martz, one of the Gamecocks' finest players, came to Carolina Stadium along with several dozen other past stars of the program to have a little fun and see some old faces. From a pre-game golf outing to the evening's five-inning game, it was a chance for fans to see all of the stars of USC baseball, past to present.
Current players like Parker Bangs and Jackie Bradley Jr. watched guys like Ward Fisher, a letterman from 1956-58, pal around with current Oakland Athletics catcher Landon Powell. Some of the most recent alumni, DeAngelo Mack and Andrew Crisp, shared a dugout with Harley Lail, the five Cromer boys and longtime former assistant coach Johnny Hunton.
For the official record, Team Carolina beat Team Gamecocks 7-6, overcoming Tripp Kelly's final-out drive to the left-field fence with a man on base. Rocky Lewis smacked a two-run home run and pitchers ranging from Martz to Andrew Cruse each took a turn.
It was a fun night. Past meets present and vice versa, plus the chance to see how everybody's getting along.
"It's kind of intimidating that some of these guys are still in playing shape," said Martz, who coaches baseball at Lewis and Clark (Ill.) Community College and is a pitching coach for the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League during the summer. "I'm still pretty decent but nothing like I used to be."
Martz, who was named National Player of the Year in 1977, shared mound space with Kip Bouknight, the Golden Spikes Award winner in 2000. Bouknight, back home after another season, spoke of how impressed he was with Carolina Stadium.
"I'm here every day in the weight room and go work out every morning," he said. "I love being here. My heart's here."
Bouknight, after several years bouncing between Double-A and Triple-A ball, was playing in an independent league in New Jersey last year. He came home to Cayce and realized how much he missed being around -- he only saw his wife three times in six months -- so the next few months should be revealing.
"I don't know what God has in store for me now, if I'm going to play again," Bouknight said. "Right now, I'm looking for a job. Looking to find something to do to keep me busy. Some place where I can do some coaching for a summer. I'd love to get into some coaching."
Plenty of fans turned out, made up of family or longtime friends of the program. Coach Ray Tanner strolled the concourse like a proud papa and plenty of other dignitaries were on hand as well.
Just a night to reflect and enjoy.
Well done.
