Diamond Extra: Stetson

Braving the elements: It was hardly ideal weather for baseball. The temperature at first pitch was 39 degrees, with overcast skies. It pretty much stayed that way for the entire game, although for a couple innings the temperature climbed all the way to 40. Only a few players, mostly pitchers, went with short sleeves. Not surprisingly, given the combination of the conditions, early start time, and opponent, the crowd was sparse. Announced attendance was 6,306, but the actual attendance was quite a bit smaller.
"It wasn't really baseball weather, but you've still got to come out here and get a win and do your job," said catcher Grayson Greiner.

Bright start: Junior outfielder Connor Bright continued his hot start to the season. He singled to short in the first inning, giving him a hit in all eleven games this season and in 12 straight games dating back to last year. Bright finished the game 1-3 with a walk.
Error-free: The Gamecocks committed two errors in the game, but both came on the same play, and by the same player. In the second inning, Stetson centerfielder Kyle Zech slapped a hit back to the mound. Pitcher Josh Reagan reached for the ball, but couldn't come up with a clean catch. That made for error number one, allowing Zech to reach first. Once Reagan came up with the ball, he threw to first but was off target, allowing Zech to take second on another error. Zech would eventually come around to score an unearned run, Reagan's only run given up.
Young Arms: The Gamecocks used four pitchers Tuesday afternoon, and all four were freshman. Reagan got the most work, and was the most impressive, but Matthew Vogel, Taylor Widener, and John Parke also pitched well. Vogel gave up a hit in his two innings of work, while Widener and Parke each pitched an inning, with Parke allowing the Gamecocks' only walk of the game
Getting the four freshmen in the game was by design, and Chad Holbrook hopes to get work for several pitchers on Wednesday as well.
"We needed to get some guys out there whether it was a close game or not," Holbrook said. "We need to get new guys in tomorrow, too."
Tanner English: English was taken out following the fifth inning, replaced by Gene Cone. Holbrook said after the game that English has a sore ankle, first injured against Clemson on Sunday, and he may sit out Wednesday's game for extra rest.
Do it again: The same two teams will play again Wednesday at 4. First pitch was originally scheduled for 7, but was moved up due to the cold weather. Sophomore right-hander Curt Britt will start for the Gamecocks. Stetson has not announced a starter.
