Edwards, Fulwiley Pick Up Weekly Honors

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball guard MiLaysia Fulwiley was named one of the USBWA Players of the Week and forward Joyce Edwards picked up her fourth SEC Freshman of the Week recognition for their roles in the No. 6/6 Gamecocks’ dominant wins last week.

Fulwiley was the team’s top scorer and percentage shooter for the week, pouring in 19.5 points per game on 64.0 percent shooting, including 42.9 percent from 3-point range, and dishing out 2.5 assists per game. Her output came in Her output came in less than half the games as she played 19.7 minutes per game. In the Gamecocks’ win over Arkansas, the sophomore scored 10 of her 15 points in the second quarter, going 4-of-5 from the field in the period. Handing out two assists in the quarter as well, she had her hands on 15 of the team’s 26 points in the period. At Vanderbilt, her offense hit another level of efficiency as she had all her tools on display. Fulwiley closed the first quarter on a personal 9-2 run that included a pair of free throws, a layup off her steal, a drive and a 3. She scored 15 of her SEC-career high 24 points in the first half. In the third quarter, she capped a 16-1 run that put the game back out of reach with a putback and a transition layup.

Edwards averaged a double-double for the week with 17.5 points and a team-high 10.0 rebounds in a pair of Gamecock victories. Her 18 points against Arkansas marked her third-straight game leading the team in scoring and included a personal 7-0 run in the third quarter. In that period alone, she posted 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting and five rebounds. At Vanderbilt, Edwards posted her second SEC double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive glass to tie the program record for offensive boards in an SEC game. The mark is the fourth-most by a Gamecock in any game and tied Aliyah Boston’s South Carolina freshman record. In the third quarter after Vanderbilt had pulled within six, Edwards scored the first six points of a 16-1 run that put the game back out of reach. Nine of her career-high 12 rebounds came in the first half, including eight of the 10 offensive boards.

The other USBWA National Players of the Week were Raegan Beers (Oklahoma), Alexis Mark (Portland), JuJu Watkins (Southern Cal), Riley Weiss (Columbia).

South Carolina heads into its final week of SEC regular-season action beginning with a trip to Ole Miss on Thu., Feb. 27, for a 9 p.m. ET tipoff. The Gamecocks wrap up their conference slate at Colonial Life Arena on Sun., Mar. 2, at 2 p.m. and will honor their seniors in a pregame ceremony expected to begin at 1:40 p.m.
