Electrifying Bowman commits to South Carolina

Wadesboro (N.C.) Anson wide receiver Michael Bowman has been on the verge of committing to South Carolina for some time, and the 5-foot-11, 170-pound speedster decided to pull the trigger earlier tonight according to his head coach Jody Grooms.

"Mike went ahead and made it official today," Grooms said. "He committed to South Carolina. He's been close to doing it for a while, and he went ahead and called coach (Fred) Chatham tonight."

Grooms believes Bowman will bring an exciting playing style to the Gamecocks.

"Mike's biggest strengths are his versatility and his big-play ability. He can literally score anytime he touches the ball. He's just a dynamic athlete. There's no doubt in my mind that he's the best overall athlete in the state of North Carolina this year. Football, baseball, basketball, you name it. He can do it all."

Grooms also plans to use Bowman in a variety of roles during the 2006 season and believes he's poised for a big year.

"He's going to play tailback, wing back, and wide receiver for us on offense, and he'll play defensive back on defense. So he's going to get a chance showcase all of his skills. Any doubters that may be out there won't doubt him any longer after this season, I can guarantee you that."

Grooms says Bowman not only has the physical skills to excel at the next level, but also the mental skills.

"Mike is a competitor who just wants to win every time he steps on the field. When the game is on the line, he wants the football in his hands. He's the kind of athlete that believes the game goes through him. He doesn't shy away from his responsibilities and just believes he can carry the team. You can't teach what he has inside."

Ultimately, Bowman chose the Gamecocks because of their approach in recruiting him.

"South Carolina did a better job of recruiting him than anyone else did," Grooms said. "Coach Chatham did an excellent job with him and really made Mike feel comfortable with the situation he'll be coming into at South Carolina. They're going to use him as a slot wide receiver and on special teams. They believe he can make an impact for them in some capacity."

Grooms also clarified Bowman's offer list.

"He had solid written offers from South Carolina, Tennessee, Colorado, and East Carolina. I think a lot of other teams will offer once they see his new highlight film, but it's too late for that now."
