South Carolina picked up a surprise commitment on Sunday night when Orange Park (Fla.) Fleming Island signal-caller Michael Scarnecchia committed to Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier.

"Yes sir, I did," Scarnecchia confirmed to GamecockCentral.com. "He (Spurrier) was real excited. He was glad to bring me on as their quarterback and was just saying how this was the best news he heard all day so I'm sure he was excited and so was I."
The 6-foot-4, 195-pounder, who was previously committed to UAB, visited Columbia for the Gamecocks' home contest against Kentucky earlier this year. Things heated up soon after.
"The Sunday after the game we went into his office and he was just telling me they are going to take a quarterback and I'm on the brink of an offer," he said. "They offered this past Tuesday."
Spurrier personally led the charge on the recruitment of Scarnecchia and he looks forward to playing for the Head Ball Coach.
"For one, Coach Spurrier is going to be one of the best quarterback coaches in the country," he said. "I felt very comfortable with the area and the coaches and loved it up there. It's SEC, you will be playing against the best talent and I like the style of offense they run. I feel it will prepare me for the NFL."
Although the Sunshine State prospect flew under the radar as a prospect, he feels he has many attributes that will lead him to be successful at the college level.
"I'm very coachable and I have a strong arm. One good thing is my coaches work with me to make audibles on the field and give me the reins so I'm good at understanding defenses and making reads."
For the season, Scarnecchia is completing 65 percent of his passes for around 1,100 yards, 18 touchdowns, and one interception.
