Friday scrimmage observations

South Carolina held its first baseball scrimmage of the fall Friday afternoon, and Gamecock Central was there.
The teams played seven innings with several designated hitters representing both sides. The home team, dressed in garnet, prevailed 4-3. In the absence of Grayson Greiner, the battle for the starting catching position heated up. The two catchers combined for three hits and three RBIs in three plate appearances. Their bats sizzled, but there is still some work to do behind the plate. Tyler Johnson earned the win, and Banks Cromer suffered the loss.
After a scoreless first inning, the black squad got on the board first. Freshman Jared Williams and JUCO transfer Collin Steagall each reached base on singles, with Williams driving in the first run of the fall with an infield single. Patrick Harrington drove in the second run of the inning with a two-out single to give the black team a 2-0 lead.
It did not take long for the garnet team to cut the lead in half, plating a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Weber Pike and Kyle Martin each reached safely with base hits to start the inning. With one out, Taylor Widener drove a ball to center for a sacrifice fly, drawing the garnet team within one. They would even the score one inning later when Logan Koch doubled into the left field corner to score D.C. Arendas from first.
The two pitching staffs settled down from there, holding the two teams scoreless until the sixth.
After a fantastic defensive play by second baseman Max Schrock, Johnson began to struggle on the mound. A base hit, wild pitch, balk, base on balls and stolen base put runners at second with one out. That's when freshman Madison Stokes drove in another freshman, Clark Scolameiro, with a sacrifice fly to center. That would be the black team's last run.
Arendas scored in the bottom of the sixth after reaching on a single. After swiping second, he scored on Loch's second RBI of the game.
Kyle Martin would single in Schrock in the seventh, ending the game and giving the garnet team a 4-3 victory.
Battle between catchers: Logan Koch caught for the winning side, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a double. His counterpart, Jared Martin, went 1-for-1 with a walk and an RBI. Neither catcher recorded an out at the plate, and both struggled at times on defense. There were four wild pitches on the day. Though the pitchers made it tough at times on the duo, they will be expected to keep those balls in front of them.
New men, big men: Collin Steagall and Alex Destino are not hard to spot. They definitely have a presence. Steagall stands about 6-foot-1 and is a solid 240 pounds. Not to be outdone, Destino is listed at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds. You won't need to see the names on the back of their jerseys to know who they are.
Several new arms displayed today: Vince Fiori and Reed Scott started the game. After each tossed two innings, several unfamiliar names made their way to the mound. Clarke Schmidt tossed three innings and struck out four batters. He surrendered three hits and walked another batter, but gave up just one run. Banks Cromer got the loss, throwing two innings and giving up two earned runs. He struck out two.
A pair of Tylers threw as well. Tyler Haswell pitched three scoreless innings and Tyler Johnson gave up a just one run. Johnson appeared to have a lively arm but struggled with his control, giving up three free passes.
