Gamecock assistant finalist for major award

Will Muschamp knows the value of a guy like Coleman Hutzler, and it appears he's getting the same attention nationally this year.

Hutzler was named one of the nominees for the Broyles Award given annually to the top assistant in college football.

Former winners of the award include Clemson's Brent Venables, Lincoln Riley, Tom Herman and Pat Narduzzi. Three of the four are currently head coaches of Power Five schools.

Hutzler currently coaches the linebackers and special teams in Columbia and has made pit stops at Florida, Boston College, New Mexico, Stanford and San Diego.

Gamecock linebackers Skai Moore and T.J. Brunson have combined for 133 tackles and the special teams have put up two kickoff returns for touchdowns this year.

The field will be narrowed down to five finalists by the end of November with the winner announced Dec. 5.
