The 6-foot, 200-pounder drew scholarship offers from multiple programs including Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Wake Forest, West Virginia, and others.
"It came down to two schools, Wake Forest and South Carolina," Smith told GamecockCentral.com on Sunday. "I chose South Carolina because they have a great staff, it's just a great atmosphere. They have great players and it's in the SEC."
Smith let the USC staff know of his commitment, and they were happy to hear about it.
"They were sort of surprised because they thought my decision was elsewhere," he said. "They were excited though. Coach (Steve) Spurrier Jr. called the head coach and told him I committed. They were excited that I chose to be a Gamecock."
Smith, who is capable of playing on either side of the ball in college but is on the Gamecocks' board as a running back, broke down what he will bring to the field once he arrives in Columbia.
"I will try to bring more motivation, powerful running with refusing to go down," he said. "Anything that is needed I'll do."
The three-star prospect averaged 7.4 yards per carry during his junior season, tallying 2,178 yards on the ground and 24 touchdowns.
