Myrtle Beach pass-rusher set to walk-on with Gamecocks

Myrtle Beach (S.C.) class of 2017 linebacker/defensive end Sean Mcgonigal Jr. saved the best for last, finishing his senior season with 19.5 sacks, the second highest total in the state.

The 6-foot-2, 203-pound pass-rusher parlayed that productive season into a preferred walk-on offer from South Carolina that he accepted on Friday.

"I am very excited to be a Gamecock and I can't wait to get to work in June!" Mcgonigal said.

Mcgonigal finished his senior season with 89 tackles, including 30 tackles for loss.

“The biggest thing about Sean is he is not a vocal leader, but one that leads by example,” Myrtle Beach coach Mickey Wilson told the Sun News in November. “He is a kid that plays extremely hard and has a great motor. He is not going to stop till the whistle blows and gives tremendous effort on every play. “I think that carries over, our kids see that on film and see that on the practice field and in the game competing very hard. It’s very contagious and our kids pick up on that.”

Mcgonigal was named first team All-State by HSSR and 4A region District 11 defensive line player of the year.
