It was quiet. Sandstorm had just finished and Parker White’s kick had boomed through the back of the end zone, dribbling weakly to the bushes for a touchback.

There was a lull as the Gamecocks jogged out to start the game on defense for their earliest home start of the season. That’s when the party started.

The in-house DJ cranked up Crime Mob’s “Knuck if you Buck” instrumental and the defense was sent into a frenzy dancing.

“To be honest, I don’t know if anyone planned it,” Rashad Fenton said. “But just the right songs were played by the DJ and I guess we just get hyped. It was just a team effort.”

The New York Jets, who did something similar during a Thursday night game about two weeks ago, sparked the idea and it took off from there.

When the DJ struck up the beat, the players started to jump up and down, twisting and moving their arms to the beat, trying to involve the crowd as much as possible.

The 79,727 fans in attendance saw it and started to jump and get equally loud as Florida started to make its way onto the field.

The same thing happened a few more times as the Gamecocks started defensive drives, and it seemed like every time they did Florida wouldn’t be able to muster much on offense.

“I feel like if it’s your favorite song the boys are going to go out there and have fun,” safety D.J. Smith said earlier this week. “Football is fun. We try to enjoy it as much as possible and not try to be serious too much. Not every single play, but when the play’s locked in we’re dialed in.”

Florida scored 20 points against the Gamecocks but was limited to 78 rushing yards and 4.9 yards per play. The Gators also went 1-for-12 on third down. They played looser, it seemed like, as they coasted to a 28-20 win while forcing three turnovers.

It seemed like Javon Kinlaw, one of the newcomers along the defensive line, seemed to get the most amped up as the beat would progress and the bass banged off the concrete around the stadium.

It’s something that really hasn’t been seen before at South Carolina, and with the way the Gamecocks defense played Saturday, it could be something that becomes evermore commonplace.

“Man we got to be on that Saturday,” Kinlaw said. “Every time they turned the song on, I just got them boys hype, get them ready to play.”
