Toney goes in-depth on commitment

South Carolina reached out to an in-state prospect on Saturday to dispense a scholarship offer.

Williston-Elko's Keshawn Toney, a defensive end/tight end prospect from the 2019 class was the recipient of the offer from Will Muschamp's program after making a visit to campus.

On Sunday, Toney turned around with a commitment to the Gamecocks.

"It's always been my top choice," Toney told GamecockCentral.com at his school on Monday. "Really, it just feels like home. I would always tell my dad if we didn't have anything to do, let's try to get up to South Carolina. I just love going up there, the games, the coaches."

The 6-foot-3, 240-pounder went into detail on how he was offered by Muschamp on Saturday and how things came to fruition with his commitment.

"I went to the camp and met with him before my junior year started. He told me they were going to wait and see how I did my junior year and how I grew. (On Saturday), he told me that they were going to go ahead and offer me because I earned it at camp. They wanted me and I wanted to be there."

USC envisions Toney playing a versatile role in the offense as a tight end.

"Really, at the h-back position, blocking, maybe split out and play the slot sometimes. I fit in their system well," he said.

What does Toney feel he will bring to the field in terms of skill set?

"I feel like I can do a lot. I have to work on blocking, but as far as route-running and catching the ball, I feel like I'm a wide receiver in a tight end's body."

As a junior, Toney had 35 catches, 600 yards, and 5 touchdowns on offense. He added 39 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 5 fumble recoveries, 1 forced fumbles, and 2 defensive touchdowns.
