Johnson signs with White Sox

Less than a week after being drafted by the Chicago White Sox, Tyler Johnson is joining the organization.

Johnson flew out to Glendale, Arizona to participate in minicamp for the organization and signed his contract shortly after arriving.

"Thank you for all the support you provided me my three years at USC," Johnson said about the fans in a tweet. "I tried my best to simply help the program win! I hope I could give you guys something to cheer about. Playing in front of you was everything I dreamed it being."

He was drafted in the fifth round (No. 147 overall) with a slot value, according to MLB.com, listed at $339,800.

Johnson was the Gamecocks' closer the back half of last season and this season, when healthy. He missed over a month this year with arm soreness, finishing with a 2.39 ERA and 10 saves in 19 appearances.

He is the first of three current Gamecock players drafted by the White Sox to sign a deal with the organization. Alex Destino and John Parke, picked in the 14th and 21st rounds respectively, are also expected to sign based on age and signing bonus.

"South Carolina will always be home for me," his tweet read. "Wearing the Carolina uniform has been a tremendous honor! #ForevertoThee."
