Justin Minaya discusses South Carolina pledge

Frank Martin landed a late addition to South Carolina's 2017 recruiting class when Old Tappan (N.J.) three-star wing Justin Minaya Tweeted his pledge to the Gamecocks.

The 6-foot-6, 190-pound Minaya went in-depth about his commitment to NJHoops.com, a Rivals.com affiliate.

"It's the best fit," Minaya told the site. "I loved the environment. There's a family atmosphere. I trust the coaches guys there. I believe they want the best for me. They will give me an opportunity to be successful and help me to be a professional player."

Minaya says he made his final decision a couple of days ago. South Carolina has been recruited him for about a month.

"It was Coach (Perry) Clark at first," Minaya said. "He was the one to reach out to me. I had a really good relationship with Coach Martin from the beginning."

Minaya, who chose the Gamecocks over Illinois, Seton Hall and UMass, took an official visit to Columbia last week.

"I would fill a void," he said. "They need a big guard and I'm a very versatile player. I toured the school. I met the players and went out to eat a lot. It was fun."

Minaya has a connection to South Carolina in that he played with sophomore guard Rakym Felder during AAU ball.

"I am versatile," Minaya said. "I can shoot, play defense and do a lot of different things. I can rebound and shoot. I can improve my handle, dribbling and lateral quickness to guard high profile point guards in college."

Minaya joins previous signees David Beatty, Jason Cudd, Ibrahim Doumbia, and Felipe Haase in the 2017 crop for USC.
