South Carolina beat Allen 110-51 in a tune-up for Saturday’s rivalry game against Clemson.

Allen scored first, but Wildens Leveque answered with back-to-back buckets. South Carolina led 8-6 at the first media timeout, and took over the game from there. Allen’s defense, overmatched against Division II opponents, offered little resistance for South Carolina. And when the Gamecocks did miss, they usually got the offensive rebound.

South Carolina shot 54% from the floor, and grabbed 23 offensive rebounds off its 38 missed shots, scoring 23 second chance points. Overall, South Carolina outrebounded Allen 59-20.

South Carolina established a number of records. The 45 made field goals are the most South Carolina has had under Frank Martin, and the attempted field goals are second most. It was the fourth-most offensive rebounds, second-most defensive rebounds, and most total rebounds. The 31 assists were the most under Martin.

“We played the game the right way,” Martin said. “I knew the manpower was not going to be there to go up against us. All we talked about yesterday was to play the game the right way. Don’t play selfishly on offense.”

All 15 Gamecocks who were available played and scored. Only Jermaine Couisnard, who was out with an ankle injury, did not play. Five Gamecocks hit double figures, led by Leveque and Devin Carter with 12 each. Mike Green got hot at the end of the game, hitting three threes and scoring 11 points in seven minutes. Keyshawn Bryant scored ten points on a variety of huge dunks. Brandon Martin had a double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists, his first career double-double.

“It brings excitement in the locker room and we can build on it,” Brandon Martin said. “We passed the ball real good. We got 31 assists so it helps us come together as a team. Everyone’s happy that they played.”

Erik Stevenson and Chico Carter, Jr each added a season-high six assists.

“I felt good. I felt comfortable out there running the plays and getting my team in the offense,” Carter said. “My teammates were giving me some assists, making shots, and Keyshawn got some thunderous dunks.”

Couisnard has been cleared to play, and will return “when he is at peace with his body,” according to Martin. Certainly, there was no reason to rush Couisnard back to play against Allen. AJ Wilson played just three minutes before leaving with a right knee injury. Wilson will have an MRI Wednesday morning. The severity of the injury won’t be known until after the tests come back.

“We’ll cross our fingers and say some words tonight,” Martin said.

Notes:

James Reese and Chico Carter each had nine points. … Ford Cooper, Jr. hit a late three, his first points as a Gamecock. … Jaylen Green had 12 points to lead Allen. Andre Baker added 11. … Ja’Von Benson had a career-high eight points and six rebounds. … South Carolina’s next game is Saturday at Clemson.
