MJ Webb making 'progress every day'

SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS FOOTBALL

It can be hard for a player that's two years into his career to move positions and try to learn something completely new, but that's the situation MJ Webb finds himself in this spring.

Webb, who's spent the last two seasons playing defensive line but is switching to the offensive line for the start of spring practice and is showing signs of improvement about a week in.

“A lot of times you take a defensive lineman and move him over and they realize athletically they’re ahead of most of the guys on that side of the ball. He’s still in the learning curve part of it but he makes progress every day."

Webb redshirted his first year on campus before playing sparingly in his redshirt sophomore year.

He picked up just four tackles and didn't have a sack in eight games last year.

This spring he's starting on the offensive line at the guard spot and working with Wolford and the rest of the group for the first few practices before having the decision to chose where he wants to stay.

Webb is still learning the position just a few practices and meetings but is showing some potential with the rest of the group.

"I tell him every day just get better at one thing. And if you keep doing that in 90 days you’ll be that much better. In 180 days you’ll be that much better,” Wolford said. “Just stack good days on good days and good things will happen to you.”

Webb has been working with the offensive line and will work with them through the team's fifth practice and then will have a decision to make after that.

The Gamecocks have a week-long break upcoming for spring break and after that Webb will decide if he wants to stay on the offensive side of the ball or go back to his original position.

He hasn't told Wolford yet what his plans are but the Gamecock offensive line coach is hoping Webb sticks with him and his position group.

“It’ll be his choice but everybody wants to be an offensive lineman," he said, smiling. "Really, deep down in their heart everyone really wants to be an offensive lineman. They’re really good, salt of the earth people.
