More Roster Moves as Camp Nears

Three more names have been added to South Carolina's football roster, while another has been subtracted.
Transfers Ian Anderson, Calvin Lee and Connor McLaurin are on USC's official roster as the Gamecocks prepare to begin preseason camp while redshirt sophomore cornerback Jay Spearman is not. Anderson and Lee will join the team as walk-ons who will not be able to play this year due to transfer rules while McLaurin is eligible to play this year.

Spearman, who has battled numerous injuries since he came to USC, is taking a medical hardship and his football career is over. Although an early entry to the team in January of 2008, Spearman suffered chronic shoulder problems that cost him some of the spring practice session and all of his true freshman season. The shoulders kept him out of the 2009 preseason and he only played in three games during the year, all on special teams, before they once again flared up and benched him for the 2010 spring session.
Spearman remains on scholarship but will not count toward the scholarship limit due to the medical. The other three are walk-ons that bring the roster to 102, although there may be some further changes.
The roster can be at a maximum of 105 players until school begins (Aug. 19), at which time other walk-on players can be added. Also, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Ronald Byrd is listed on the current roster, although coach Steve Spurrier told GamecockCentral.com on Wednesday that Byrd was transferring.
Anderson is a 6-foot-6, 315-pound offensive lineman who transferred from Kentucky after walking on but not seeing any action last year. A Hilton Head native who played at Hilton Head Preparatory School, Anderson was considered a two-star recruit by Rivals.com.
USC was recruiting him, along with Appalachian State, Boston College and Michigan State, before he decided on Kentucky. He has three remaining years of eligibility after the 2010 season, when he must sit out.
Lee is a local, having played at Chapin High School before walking on at Alabama in 2008. The 6-2, 215-pound linebacker redshirted as a sophomore with the Crimson Tide in 2009 before spending the spring of 2010 at Midlands Technical College.
He transferred to USC for the fall semester and joined the team, although like Anderson, he will have to sit out a year. Lee will have two years of eligibility.
McLaurin, a 6-0, 225-pound linebacker, is eligible to play this year after transferring from Wake Technical (N.C.) Community College. A product from Garner (N.C.) Magnet High School, the same school that produced current Gamecocks Chris Culliver and Cedrick Snead, McLaurin was named the defensive MVP of the conference as a senior and turned down a scholarship offer from Fayetteville State. He has three years of eligibility.
McLaurin has already been assigned uniform No. 54 while Anderson and Lee will get their numbers before camp. The Gamecocks report on Aug. 2 and hold their first practice at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 3 at the Bluff Road practice fields.
