T-Rob: Players buying into core principles (plus video)
South Carolina defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson and several defensive players spoke with the media following Friday's fall practice.
-- Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson says cornerback Steven Montac has joined the program.
-- Robinson says the players are buying into what they're teaching -- to play with intensity and discipline and to get the football. The key is to get better every day.
-- Robinson says JaMarcus King is very talented and has great length. He has a long way to go because JUCO is different than SEC but he has acclimated well.
-- Robinson says a lot of practice is designed to be a physical outfit -- to be able to fit the run and run the ball, because it's a line-of-scrimmage league. Robinson says they're installing every day and that the players are having a lot thrown at them. They have to prepare off the field as well.
-- Robinson mentioned Bryson Allen-Williams, TJ Holloman, Sherrod Pittman, Jonathan Walton and TJ Brunson as players who have stepped up in Skai Moore's absence.
-- Dante Sawyer could play inside in some schemes, but is playing outside at the 5 and 6-technique defensive end spots.
-- Robinson says they want to have 10 defensive linemen who can rotate in games and then in the fourth quarter plays the ones who have performed the best that day.
-- Robinson says the secondary is still light-years away, but they have time and he's pleased with the progress so far.
-- All of the players mentioned being excited about putting on the pads for the first time on Saturday.
-- Sophomore Rashad Fenton says he's been working at primarily nickelback, but some corner.
Fenton has been impressed with the addition of JaMarcus King to the defense and says his length impresses him in press coverage.
He says Will Muschamp and Travaris Robinson have high expectations for the defensive backs.
-- Chaz Elder says that he and D.J. Smith have been taking first team reps at safety.
-- Bryson Allen-Williams says the team is ready to get the pads on (Saturday), but that the practices have been physical already. Allen-Williams didn't want to make any comparisons between they physicality of last year's practices and this year's.
Allen-Williams says he believes he has stepped up and pointed out Jonathan Walton, TJ Holloman and Sherrod Pittman as others who have stepped up.
-- T.J. Holloman says there hasn't been a set rotation at linebacker yet. They're all just repping.
