Yulee (FL) tight end Kelvin Rainey, a 6-foot-3, 218-pounder committed to recruiter Steve Spurrier, Jr. Thursday evening.
"He told me he was excited, that they had been evaluating their list and I came out on top every time," Rainey told GamecockCentral.com. "He said they had been waiting for me to see what I was going to do."
The four-star prospect went into detail about why he chose the Gamecocks.
"I made it because I've been around them since my sophomore year. I've built a good relationship with the coaching staff. Altogether, it's just an amazing program."
Rainey credited Spurrier Jr. with playing a big role in the recruiting process and the choice he made.
"He did a good job, you know. He laid things out on the table well. He didn't sugar-coat anything. It wasn't like he said one thing one day and one thing another. He was honest and straight-forward. Other then being a coach, we became friends and that's what I wanted."
Additionally, Rainey is excited about the opportunities to learn in the classroom once he heads to Columbia. He got a chance to see what Carolina offers in that department when visiting.
"The academics really hit me hard. It's what I needed. They had it all laid out for me, what I need to do. It was nice to be there while school was going on."
Having the chance to play in Steve Spurrier's offense, one that has produced a bevy of NFL talent on the offensive side of the ball, also caught Rainey's attention.
"I'm pretty excited," he said of playing for Spurrier. "He's a big offensive mind. He likes strong offensive guys on that side of the ball. This is my chance to show them what I can do as a big, athletic target. It's something to look forward to."
Rainey, rated by Rivals.com as the nation's eleventh-best tight end prospect, hopes to show USC's staff why they offered once he arrives as a freshman.
"My goal is to come in, work hard and work for a starting spot. I want to be that guy that they are looking for. I want to be exactly what they think I am now, but better. Route-running, catching the ball, blocking, I want to excel."
