Schmidt officially signs with Yankees

The same day former Gamecock pitcher Tyler Webb made his major-leauge debut with the Yankees, current righty Clarke Schmidt signed a professional contract with the same organization.

It was announced via Twitter he signed with the club, and according to Jack Curry of the YES Network the right-handed pitcher signed for $2,184,300. Slot value for his pick was $3,458,600.

Schmidt was taken in the first round of this year's MLB Draft, No. 16 overall. He was just the 14th Gamecock to be taken in the first or supplemental rounds of the MLB Draft and the highest player selected since Justin Smoak went No. 11 overall to the Texas Rangers.

He's still over a year away from pitching to live batters after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May, but he's one of five Gamecock alums in the Yankees organization, joining Jordan Montgomery, Tyler Webb, Taylor Widener and Dom Thompson-Williams.
