Senior cornerback giving up football

South Carolina senior cornerback Rico McWilliams is no longer with the team, head coach Will Muschamp announced during his weekly press conference Monday afternoon.

"We've got four scholarship corners," Muschamp said. "It's not the best situation, but it is what it is. You're not going to hear us complain about it."

Muschamp says that Steven Montac will serve as the team's fourth cornerback with safety D.J. Smith as an emergency option.

McWilliams took a brief excused leave of absence from the team in mid-August after family members' belongings were devastated by flooding in Louisiana. But McWilliams was back on the team and said last week that he was working hard to catch up from the missed time.

Muschamp, on a teleconference last week, essentially called McWilliams the team's fourth cornerback, behind Rashad Fenton, Chris Lammons and Jamarcus King.

A senior from Hampton, Ga.'s Lovejoy High, McWilliams has played in 33 games over the past three seasons and owns 18 career starts, second among returning players behind only Skai Moore.

McWilliams played in all 12 games last season, starting 10. He was credited with 32 tackles including 24 solo stops. He had a pair of pass breakups and recovered a fumble.

McWilliams is a two-time member of the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll.
