Poplarville (Miss.) Pearl River Community College's Darrius Caldwell became an official pledge to South Carolina this week after Gamecock defensive line coach Deke Adams paid a visit to his school.
The 6-foot-6, 240-pounder, who will have two years of eligibility at the Division I level, is a product of Atlanta (Ga.) Mays High where he drew numerous scholarship offers (including South Carolina) prior to signing with Illinois.
As a redshirt freshman at Illinois, Caldwell played in all 12 games and tallied 17 tackles, 2.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Caldwell is the seventeenth verbal commitment for South Carolina in the 2014 class (JUCO DT Abu Lamin has already enrolled at USC). Caldwell joins fellow JUCO prospect Jhaustin Thomas as in the ranks of the Gamecock defensive end commitments as well as Rivals100 member Dante Sawyer. Goose Creek's Kalan Ritchie may also start his career on the defensive line.
