South Carolina received their 2017 National Championship rings Saturday during a ceremony at halftime of the football game against Vanderbilt.
The ceremony brought back former players Alaina Coates, Kaela Davis, and Allisha Gray. All were first round WNBA Draft picks, and Gray was named the WNBA Rookie of the Year. Coates, along with assistant coaches Lisa Boyer and Fred Chmiel, was the celebrity starter before the game.
Dawn Staley got to see the rings a few weeks ago, but the players saw the rings for the first time Saturday.
"I didn't want our players to see it prematurely," Staley said. "I wanted them to see it in this moment and I knew it wouldn't disappoint."
Staley joked that the players would probably never get married now, because potential husbands would be hard pressed to find a better ring.
"Allisha (Gray) says she is married to the game now," joked Staley.
South Carolina chose to hold the ring ceremony at the football game in order for as many fans as possible to be in attendance. Homecoming weekend also brought back the former players.
"It's always good to have alumni come back for homecoming, but to see the national championship team come together was a lot of fun," A'ja Wilson said. "It was like the gang was back together."
Wilson said she does not know what she will do with her ring. She said her mother probably won't let her
There will also be a banner raising ceremony prior to the season-opener on November 10.
