Webb called up by Yankees

After over four years in the minor leagues, former Gamecock pitcher Tyler Webb got the call Thursday. The lefty reliever was promoted from Triple-A by the Yankees and will report to the team immediately as it hosts the Angels tonight.

Webb has been in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since 2014 and has a 3-1 record with a 3.24 ERA in 21 relief appearances for the RailRiders this season. Over his last 10 appearances (14.1 innings) he has a 2.51 ERA and 20 strikeouts.

He now joins Jordan Montgomery on the Yankees' major league roster. Montgomery was called up this season, shortly after Opening Day, and has a 5-4 record and a 3.74 ERA as a starter.

Webb was on three teams that reached the College World Series during his college career, including both national title-winning teams.

In four seasons, he went 15-7 with a career 2.34 ERA and 110 total games, mostly in relief. He picked up 20 career saves, including 17 his final year in 2013.

Webb is the sixth member of the 2010 national championship team to spend time in the majors, joining Whit Merrifield, Christian Walker, Jackie Bradley Jr., Michael Roth and Sam Dyson as players from that team who have been called up to the show.

The Yankees take on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Yankee Stadium at 7:05 p.m.
