Freshman offensive lineman Darius Whitfield has been granted his release from South Carolina and will transfer to another program, GamecockCentral.com has learned.
The Mobile (Alabama) St. Paul's product, a member of the 2016 recruiting class, was notable for having committed to the Gamecocks on the day of Steve Spurrier's resignation press conference.
He was ranked by Rivals.com as a four-star prospect, having earned all-state honors on the offensive line as a senior in high school.
Whitfield, who moved over from defensive line to the offensive line during preseason practice, took a redshirt this season with the Gamecocks.
