Mark Kingston and his staff picked up another recruit Thursday afternoon as Braylen Wimmer announced via Twitter his commitment to South Carolina.
Wimmer, who plays high school baseball in Oklahoma, is the No. 4 shortstop in the state and No. 12 overall prospect, according to PerfectGame.
“His No. 1 thing is player development," Wimmer said about Kingston's pitch to him. "My ultimate goal is to make it to the major leagues and that’s what he wants his players to do. That was his number one thing. That was a big part for me.”

He visited campus this past weekend for South Carolina's football game against Louisiana Tech. He also was able to tour the baseball facilities and watch the Gamecocks scrimmage Saturday morning.
Wimmer also visited Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Missouri and Missouri State.
“It’s a top-tier program," he said in a phone interview. "It’s everything you could ever want. As soon as I stepped on campus I fell in love with everything about it. It was just awesome.”
An honorable mention this year for The Oklahoman's All-State baseball roster, Wimmer has played on his varsity team since at least his freshman year.
At 6-foot-2, he's working on bulking up a little while also getting faster. He still works on every other aspect of the game, but loves playing defense.
“I used to be the fastest kid around when I was little. Now I grew and I didn’t grow into my body very well. I’ve just been working on my speed,” Wimmer said. “I love playing defense. I take pride playing defense. I probably like playing defense more than hitting. I’m always working on offense. The swing’s never ending.”

Wimmer is the 13th member of the 2019 class and eighth since Kingston and his staff took over at the beginning of July.
South Carolina has a good history of churning out professional shortstops, and Kingston showed him all of the first round picks from South Carolina.
Kingston's also coached Paul DeJong at Illinois State, the current shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals, and seeing those names was a big selling point for Wimmer.
“They see a lot of potential in me," he said. "I’m just going to keep getting better. Once I get there, I’m going to get a lot better. I think a lot of potential is what he sees in me. He wants to work with me.”
