Gamecocks superb in graduation rates

The NCAA released its latest round of graduation success rate (GSR) data this week for the 2009 cohort, as GSR is tracked based on a six-year period for graduation time frame.

The latest data indicates that South Carolina has been near the top of the country in graduating student-athletes in that six-year period. USC graduated 95 percent of student-athletes in the 2009 cohort.

According to Mississippi State's Bill Martin, that figure ranks South Carolina first in the SEC, with Vanderbilt the closest next program at 84 percent. Matt Murschel of the Orlando Sentinel notes that South Carolina trailed only Stanford (99 percent) and Northwestern (97 percent) in graduating those who enrolled in 2009. USC ranked ahead of programs like Duke, Notre Dame, and others in that time period.

In calculating GSR, the NCAA holds schools accountable for graduating student-athletes who transferred into the school, but does not penalize for student-athletes who transfer out of the school in good academic standing.
